Obesity

Childhood obesity rates are on the rise in the United States. Whether your child is overweight or obese is determined by their body mass index (BMI). The BMI is calculated by using height and weight and will be calculated at all well-child check-ups starting at 2 years of age. During your child’s wellness exam your doctor will discuss your child’s BMI and let you know if he/she is overweight or obese. If your child is obese this puts him/her at risk for many health problems including high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep problems, and musculoskeletal issues to name a few. Our goal in discussing these issues is not to make your child feel bad about their weight but to give guidance on how to lead a healthy lifestyle.
